The child between knowledge and truth, or “what is psychoanalysis for a child?”

In his “Note on the child”, Lacan (1969/2003) states that the child’s symptom can respond to what is symptomatic in the family structure and that, in this context, it is defined as a representative of the truth. In the child, the symptom can then represent the truth of the family couple or reveal the truth of the object of the maternal fantasy, alienating in itself any possible access by the mother to her own truth. In both cases, the child is alienated from the truth of meaning coming from the Other. Betting on the analyst’s discourse and supporting the clinic with children is betting on the possibility that psychoanalysis is, for the child, a way of constructing a knowledge (S2) that comes in place of this truth in which the subject, alienated, is held hostage. This argument will be discussed in the text based on clippings from a clinical case.
