No. 4 (2002): What is expected of a psychoanalyst?

View No. 4 (2002): What is expected of a psychoanalyst?

The question "What is expected of a psychoanalyst?" compels psychoanalysis to confront the ethical premises of its praxis. The emergence of an analyst does not stem from a bureaucratic investiture or pre-established guarantees of knowledge; rather, it arises from the analytic act and the subjective destitution that occurs at the conclusion of an analysis. By moving away from the illusion of the "One" and the comfort of unifying ideals, the practice of psychoanalysis is anchored in the logic of otherness and the "not-all" (*pas-tout*). This demands a subject capable of enduring the position of "cause of desire" and confronting the incompleteness—the *Real*—that language perpetually circles around but never fully captures.

This fourth volume of the journal *Stylus*—a publication of the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL)—is dedicated to the theme "What is expected of a psychoanalyst?" It brings together essays, clinical interventions, and testimonies that document the creation and development of the School of Psychoanalysis of the Lacanian Field. Through reflections on the transmission of psychoanalysis, the *passe* (the procedure for the passage from analysand to analyst), the analyst’s desire, the notion of *supplence* (supplementation), and the impasses encountered in the direction of the cure—covering topics ranging from the approach to psychoses and interventions with premature infants to a historical revisiting of Ferenczi—this edition articulates a collective logic. This logic is founded upon shared elaboration, conceptual rigor, and the maintenance of a practice that does not retreat in the face of the "impossible" that serves as its cause.
