No. 11 (2005): The subject’s choices in sex, life, and death

View No. 11 (2005): The subject’s choices in sex, life, and death

From the perspective of psychoanalysis, positing the existence of choices in life, sex, and death introduces an originary and structural choice: the "forced choice," in which any option entails an inevitable loss. Far from modern illusions of "free will," the life of a speaking being is marked by the cut of language—"your money or your life"—revealing that the human condition is constituted through loss and submission to the signifier of the Other, a state in which anxiety emerges as the affect that does not deceive.

In this 11th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a publication of the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL) centered on the theme "The Subject’s Choices in Sex, Life, and Death"—psychoanalysts and researchers examine the impasses and determinations that permeate contemporary subjectivity. Through lectures, clinical essays, and explorations of topics such as old age, euthanasia, substance dependence, and the direction of treatment, this edition delves into the differential clinical study of anxiety, the analytic act, and the ways in which the subject responds to the "real" within social bonds and civilization.
