No. 12 (2006): What choices and impasses does the subject suffer from?
Freud forged the body of knowledge that is psychoanalysis by confronting the impasses of his clinical experience—an experience in which the "real" at stake reveals itself as something incurable, a radical "not-knowing" that drives both repetition and the very cause of desire. Far from any illusion of completeness or complementarity between the sexes, the analytic experience is structured by the artifice of transference and the temporal dimension of the act. It calls upon the subject—divided by language—to take an active stance regarding their own losses, impasses, and ethical choices in the face of the "discontent in civilization."
In this 12th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a biannual publication of the *Associação Fóruns do Campo Lacaniano* (AFCL)—the central inquiry is: "What are the choices and impasses from which the subject suffers?" Bringing together contributions from the IV Meeting of the EPFCL-Brazil and the II Latin American Meeting—which centered on the themes of sex, life, and death—psychoanalysts and researchers explore the symbolic determinations and contingencies of the *parlêtre* (the "speaking-being"). By linking a critique of capitalist discourse, logical time, the Oedipus complex, and sexuation to clinical impasses and the mechanism of the *passe*, this issue demonstrates how analysis operates from effect to cause, enabling the subject to confront the pitfalls of their existence and sustain a resolute desire.
