No. 13 (2006): Jouissance: modalities and paradoxes

View No. 13 (2006): Jouissance: modalities and paradoxes

Although psychoanalysis initially established the fundamental concepts of the unconscious, repetition, transference, and drive, the teaching of Jacques Lacan elevated the notion of *jouissance* (enjoyment) to the status of a concept and a distinct operational field, raising the logic of this incalculable aspect of existence to an authentic science of the real. Far from being reduced to mere mortification through language, the signifier also functions as a cause of *jouissance*, confronting the speaking being with the contingency of the body-as-drive, the excess of life, and an incurable loss that resists any attempt at total symbolization.

In this 13th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a biannual publication of the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL) centered on the theme "Jouissance: Modalities and Paradoxes"—psychoanalysts and researchers examine the manifestations of this irreducible real. By linking conceptual debate with classical tragedy, literature, issues of gender and sexuation, as well as the direction of the treatment and the *passe*, this edition explores *jouissance* through its clinical paradoxes—ranging from psychosomatic phenomenology and the obsessive symptom to identification with the *sinthome* and the ethics of desire in act.
