Abstract

The text explores the relationship between the affect of anguish and creative processes in art, highlighting how it is common for artists to face intense challenges in life, such as melancholy, psychic suffering, substance use, and other chalenges. From Lacan’s perspective, anguish is seen as an affect tied to the Real and to the impossibility of symbolization, a core aspect of creative processes where the artist experiences a confrontation with existential emptiness. The act of creation, much like the analytical process, involves a passage through anguish. Art circles the Real and allows the artist to confront their anguish by sharing their creation, bringing forth desire, sublimation, and satisfaction derived from their own artistic production.
